Counter against higher ovr teams and attacking or control against weaker teams seems do the work for me. For formations I think most will do as long as you have the right players. If you're using a very attacking formation like 4-2-4, you need fullbacks and midfielders that are solid in defence or you'll get cooked in counter attacks.
